Recent research evidence has shown that infants born with developmental disabilities such as Down syndrome are often considered as not having the capacity to breast feed successfully. Placing the difficulties to breastfeed solely on the condition of the infant often means that the relevant specialist support for the new parent and the health benefits of breastfeeding are often overlooked.

This one day conference will focus on examples of good practice from the
perspectives of parents and health care professionals; the ultimate aim is to engage in the necessary debates towards more inclusive practice. Some of the topics
covered around breastfeeding include:
• Examples of good practice from healthcare professionals
• Specialist support
• Parents’ personal experiences
• Overview of current research evidence
• The impact of visual images within a health promotional approach

This conference will be beneficial to new parents; breastfeeding
coordinators; researchers and academics, health visitors, speech and language therapists, midwifery and primary health care practitioners students and members of the public.

A Photography exhibition was shown at Sir John Cass Dept of Art Media & Design, London during awareness week and also at the OXO Tower Gallery, South Bank, London.
Photographers include Richard & Fiona Bailey, Aviv Yaron & Fiona Field, Katye Brimacombe, Richard Davis and Maria de Fatima Campos

The exhibition is entitled "Shifting Perspectives" and shows work by seven London photographers whose children have Down's syndrome. This work offers alternative representations of both adults and children with Down's syndrome and challenges conventional attitudes and prejudices.

Down's Syndrome Awareness Week
To mark this week photographer Maria de Fatima Campos has published a series
of pictures about her daughter Victoria and her first three years of life as a child who has DS.

The Branch is building a database of facilities for people with Down's Syndrome that could be accessed on line.
We need IT experts who can help us with this.
We are also arranging for specialist Occupational Therapy to be available free at the point of service.
